The pistachio of Aegina is a special and traditional PDO product of Greece, with significant nutritional and economic value. The cultivation flourishes in the island of Aegina, a region that, with its micro-climatic characteristics, adds a distinct quality to the product.
At the same time, producers face difficulties related to both inputs in the fields and the effective treatment of the crop’s pests and diseases; factors that increase production costs and affect the quality and quantity of production.
In this context, and aiming at solving the problems faced by the producers, a collaboration between gaiasense and pistachio producers of Aegina was recently announced. The four telemetric stations of gaiasense, which were recently installed in pistachio fields of Aegina, ensure the coverage of a total area of 1,600 hectares of pistachio fields at almost the whole island.
Producers are convinced that with the gaiasense system they will have more cultivation possibilities, lower production costs and environmental footprint
The cooperation aims to provide solutions to the reduced production of recent years and focuses on the management of the crop’s pests and diseases, the reduction of production costs while at the same time ensuring a constantly high quality of the produced pistachios.
At the same time, a reduction in the environmental footprint of the cultivation is expected, an aspect that is among the subjects of the European project LIFE GAIA Sense, in the context of which this cooperation takes place.
