COTTON – N. Karagiorgou Bros.

The N. KARAGIORGOU Bros S.A. is one of the largest ginning companies in Greece. It was founded in 1951 in the legal form of a limited liability company and since 1977 it has been transformed into a limited liability company.

Cotton ginning is one of the dominant sectors of the Greek economy. In fact, our country has a significant share of the world cotton production. The group of companies has 6 privately owned cotton ginning plants located in Thessaly, Macedonia and Thrace. The above facilities are used for the collection of not only seed cotton but also cereals. The number of producers cooperating with the company is approximately 20,000. The company operates certification programmes for both cotton and durum wheat cultivation.

Producers can join the available certification programs as long as their product meets certain conditions. In the cotton sector, the company applies an innovative certification protocol, which enables producers to grow varieties with good quality characteristics, providing an additional profit.

Since 2023, the company has started a collaboration with NEUROPUBLIC with a strategic vision to innovate and modernize the production model in a demanding crop such as cotton. The aim of the partnership is to develop an extensive, diverse and modern agro-technological infrastructure that has a huge pro-environmental footprint in cotton cultivation.

At the same time, through the implementation of the gaiasense smart farming system, the cooperating producers (with the company N. KARAGIORGOU Bros S.A. ) in the areas of Farsala, Larissa and Karditsa to adopt pro-environmental practices that aim at the rational management of inputs in terms of irrigation and nutrition, as well as in interventions to deal with the main enemies of cotton cultivation such as the green and pink worm.

From the first results of the implementation of the gaiasense smart farming system, the cooperating producers have observed savings in irrigation water and fertilizer, as well as improvements in production and quality of the product produced, making the final product even more competitive.
